BC's Curtis Gerein wins silver at World Age Group Championships
 (11/19/09) Mariah Madigan and
Samantha Smith, both of Ontario won the gold medal in
synchronized trampoline and Curtis Gerein (Okanagan) added a
silver in double mini trampoline on Wednesday to open the world age
group trampoline and tumbling championships.
In boys double mini in the 15-16 age group, Alexander Odintsov of
Russia was the winner with a 71.900 score, Gerein followed at 69.600
and Andrey Gladenkov of Russia was third at 69.400. Gerein won bronze
in the event at the 2007 worlds in Quebec City.
“It was an O.K., performance but not my best,” said Gerein, who’ll also
compete in trampoline later this week. “I messed up on my prelims and
it wasn’t as strong as it could have been. My final went much better. I
came here with the goal to win a medal.”
In women’s synchronized trampoline in the 17-18 age group, Madigan and
Smith finished first with 44.300 points. Rachel Schmidt and Jessica
Shaw of New Zealand were second at 44.100 and Natasha Carter and Emma
Scanlon of Britain third at 44.000.
Madigan and Smith only joined forces three weeks ago after Madigan’s
regular partner wasn’t going to be able to compete due to injury.
In men’s 17-18 synchronized trampoline, Keegan Soehn of Red Deer,
Alta., and Sébastien St-Germain of Montreal tied for the third best
score with Daniel Greaves and Bradley Hampson of Britain. However the
British pair was awarded the bronze following the tie breaking
procedure and the Canadians were fourth.
Four other BC athletes were in action yesterday:

World Trampoline Championships Conclude | BC's Chelsea Nerpio takes silver | Karen Cockburn wins 2 medals
 (11/16/09) The 2009 World Trampoline Championships concluded this weekend in St. Petersburg, Russia. In
double-mini, the
Canadian squad of BC's Chelsea Nerpio (Shasta), along with Corissa
Boychuk, Julie Warnock and Gillian Bruce all of Alberta, moved up from
third-place after prelims to win the team silver.
“This competition has been awesome,” said Bruce. “Other teams want to
be like us. We have a good time together all year and we want to be
together and it shows in our performance.”
Karen Cockburn competing at her eighth world championships, took the
bronze medal in the women’s individual trampoline competition, a result
equalled by teammates Ashley Speed (ON) in women’s tumbling
and Boychuk in double-mini trampoline.
The Canadian women’s team won a total of seven medals at the week-long
competition, equalling its showing at the last world championships two
years ago in Quebec City.
Cockburn’s polished performance reaffirmed her status as one of the
sport’s all-time greats in her first international competition in
women’s individual trampoline since winning a silver medal at the
Beijing Olympics over a year ago.
Cockburn earned her bronze medal with a score of 38.70 points behind
China’s Shanshan Huang who took the gold with 39.50 and runner-up Wenna
He at 39.40.
Rosannagh MacLennan of Toronto, performed the most difficult routine of
the women’s final, but didn’t score as high marks for execution and had
to settle for fourth with 38.40 points.
Cockburn
also won a silver medal in the synchro competiaion along with partner
MacLennan. They had established a world record score for
men and women in the synchro preliminaries, but were edged by a Chinese
pair in the final for the gold medal.
In women’s tumbling, Ashley Speed saved her most difficult moves for
the second of two passes and came away with a surprise bronze medal.
Anna Korobeynikova of Russia took the gold with 69.40 points.
In women’s double-mini trampoline, Corissa Boychuk of Airdrie, Alta.,
bounced back from an off- target landing on her first pass to edge
American Aubree Balkan by one-hundredth of a point for the bronze medal
with a score of 67.10 points. Victoria Voronina of Russia took the gold
with 68.30 points. Julie Warnock of Calgary, coming back from a torn
achilles tendon, was 5th with 65.8 points.
In men’s double-mini trampoline, Alex Seifert of Calgary placed 7th,
and in men’s synchro trampoline Jason Burnett of Toronto and Charles
Thibault of Quebec City were fifth.

BC's Luke Friesen & Chelsea Nerpio finish 10th in DMT qualification at World Championships

Luke Friesen (Okanagan) and Chelsea Nerpio (Shasta) both finished in
10th position in DMT qualification today at the World Championships in
St. Petersburg Russia.
Friesen
scored 71.000, just behind teammate Alexander Seifert to miss out on a
spot in the finals. His scores along with those of Seifert, Kyle Soehn
and Scott Young qualified the Canadians for the team finals with a
score of 212.700 behind Russia and Portugal.
Nerpio
also missed out on a spot in the individual finals with a score of
67.500. Two Canadians, Julie Warnock and Corissa Boychuk, will compete
in the finals. The Canadian women also qualified for the team finals
with a score of 204.400 in 3rd position behind Portugal and Russia.
