Gymnastics Foundations EVALUATION (updated August 30, 2010)

There is a final component to completing the Gymnastics Foundations certification: the evaluation of the coach.  Once a coach has completed the three (3) Gymnastics Foundations courses in order (GF Intro, GF Theory and GF Discipline specific course) and the Make Ethical Decisions online evaluation, the coach may request to be evaluated.  Successful completion of the evaluation will complete a coach's Gymnastics Foundations certification.

The National Coaching Certification Program is a collaboration of the Government of Canada, the provincial/territorial governments, the national and provincial/ territorial sport organizations and the Coaching Association of Canada.

The NCCP specifically is a coach training and certification program for many different sports across Canada. NCCP courses are designed to meet the needs of all types of coaches, from the first-time coach to the head coach of a national team. The NCCP is the recognized national standard for coach training and certification in Canada. As part of the program, all coaches are trained in ethical decision-making and sport safety.

NCCP Coaching Course Levels and Descriptions

Pre-CIT

The Pre-CIT program is NOT actually part of NCCP.  It is a two-year program for 13-15 year olds  Please click here for more information on the Pre-CIT program.

Gymnastics Foundations (old Level 1)

As of January 2009 the old NCCP Level 1 Technical courses were replaced with Gymnastics Foundations.  Gymnastics Foundations consists of three courses and an evaluation to complete certification.

The GF Intro course is a two day in-gym course that is applicable to ALL gymnastics disciplines (ie Artistic, Trampoline and Active Start) coaches would all take the course together).

The GF Theory course is a one day classroom course that covers the Theory component (again, common to all disciplines).  The Theory course CANNOT be taken before the Intro course.
  • There must be a minimum of 10 weeks between Part 1 and Part 2 to allow time for the coach to complete 10 practical tasks

The GF Discipline Specific course is a one day in-gym course that is specific to each discipline.  Coaches can take this course immediately after completing the GF Theory course (there is no time requirement as with the GF Intro course)  Disciplines include:
  • Artistic
  • Trampoline
  • Active Start (formerly Preschool 'PCCP' program)
  • Rhythmic
  • Acrobatic (not available yet)
  • Aerobic (not available yet)

Certification is finalized following successful completion of all courses, a coaching portfolio AND GF Evaluation

Coaches who complete the Gymnastics Foundations program and want to also coach another gymnastics discipline (ie trampoline as well as artistic) can do so by attending the one day Discipline Specific course for that discipline.  Coaches only have to complete the GF Intro and GF Theory courses ONCE.

For coaches who began their Level 1 certification or who were 'Old' NCCP Level 1 certified prior to December 31, 2009, please refer to Transition to Gymnastics Foundations.

These courses are offered through Gymnastics BC. For more details and list of courses, click here

To find the closest course module offerings in your area, please visit the Coaches Association of BC (CABC) web site or call (604) 333-3600.  The modules are also available through CABC via homestudy

Transition from 'Old' NCCP Level 1 to Gymnastics Foundations

As of January 1, 2010, all coaches that were certified Level 1 under the old NCCP program have had their certification transferred so instead of being certified Level 1, they are now certified Gymnastics Foundations.

For coaches that have SOME old NCCP Level 1 (but did not complete their Level 1 certification), it was originally communicated that they would not get credit for anything and would have to start over Gymnastics Foundations.  We have since learned that this is not the case.

To clarify, here are the four possible scenarios:

  • If a coach ONLY had the Introduction to Competition Part "A" Theory course, they would need to complete the Gymnastics Foundations Intro and Discipline Specific courses to become a 'Trained' GF coach.  To complete certification they would need to do the GF Evaluation

  • If a coach ONLY had Technical Level 1, they would need to complete the Gymnastics Foundations Theory course to become a 'Trained' GF coach.  To complete certification they would need to do the GF Evaluation

  • If a coach ONLY had Technical and Practical Level 1, they would need to complete the Gymnastics Foundations Theory course to complete their certification

  • If a coach ONLY had Technical and Theory Level 1, they would just need to do the GF Evaluation to complete their certification

NOTE: Only a coach that is ‘certified’ Gymnastics Foundations or higher can coach their own group without any supervision

A coach that has completed all three courses of the Gymnastics Foundations program (Intro, Theory and Discipline specific) is considered a ‘Trained’ GF coach (NOT 'certified) and can only coach under ‘Indirect Supervision’.

A coach that has taken at least one but not all three of the Gymnastics Foundations courses is considered a 'Coach-in-Training' and can only coach under 'Direct Supervision'

Indirect Supervision is defined as:

  • One ‘certified’ coach being within reasonable proximity (within eye-sight) of the coaches and group(s) he/she is supervising. A certified coach could indirectly supervise up to ten coaches with their own groups at one time

  • the supervising coach must be certified in the discipline they are supervising

Direct Supervision is defined as:

  • One ‘certified’ coach supervising a maximum of one or two GF 'Coaches-in-Training’ or ‘Pre-CIT’  coaches.  The supervising coach must physically be with the group for the duration of the class / session (in the case of supervising two coaches, the supervising coach must go between the two groups)

  • the supervising coach must be certified in the discipline they are supervising

To become ‘Certified’, a ‘Trained’ GF coach must go through an evaluation process which will consist of an onsite or video submission of a lesson, as well as the submission of a coaching portfolio.

Make Ethical Decisions

ALL coaches must complete the Make Ethical Decisions (MED) module and online evaluation

  • Gymnastics Foundations Coaches must complete the module and online evaluation as part of their certification
  • Coaches who are certified under any level of the old NCCP program must complete this module by December 31, 2014 or they will be reassigned "In Training" status and be restored to certified when the MED module is completed
    • Coaches that took old Level 1 Theory prior to April 2004 (not Introduction to Competition Part "A"), may need to purchase the homestudy MED to successfully complete the evaluation.  They can register for the homestudy option with the Coaches Association of BC (they don't necessarily need to complete the whole module), to get a copy of the resource manual, but coaches can also share the manual for the purpose of completing the online evaluation

    • Coaches are recommended to complete the evaluation pre-test until they feel confident that they will pass the online evaluation.  If a coach fails the online evaluation twice, he/she will have to complete the MED module again

Respect in Sport

Respect in Sport is a grassroots on-line training course for coaches and sport leaders. It is designed as a tool to assist coaches in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment, and bullying in sport. The course is completed online.

As mandated by Gymnastics Canada, ALL Gymnastics BC coaches 15 years of age or older are required to complete this course as part of their registration requirements.  There are no exemptions.

If you need to print off a copy of your RiS certificate (for your own records or to provide to your employer), login to the system and click on the 'Print Certification' link (centre aligned) near the bottom of the page (above the completed modules) »»» see image.

Police Record Checks

All coaches (18 years or older) who wish to be members of GBC must complete and file a Police Record Check (PRC) with Gymnastics BC.  Gymnastics BC is responsible, at law, to do everything reasonable to provide a safe and secure environment for participants in it’s programs. GBC takes this very seriously, and is committed to, fulfilling the duty of care it owes to its members.

PRCs are valid for a period of three years (new as of September 2010). Notwithstanding this, Gymnastics BC may at any time request that an individual in a designated category provide a PRC if GBC has grounds to believe that the results of the PRC obtained previously are no longer accurate.

To see the complete Screening Policy, please see 1.6 of Section 1B: Ethics of the Gymnastics BC Policy and Procedures manual.

Gymnastics BC affiliated with myBackCheck.com in 2009 to provide an easy online way (at a reduced fee) for coaches to complete PRCs.

Unfortunately, due to changes to federal policies  myBackCheck.com is no longer able to conduct searches for pardoned sexual offices (Vulnerable Sector Searches - VSS).  While mybackcheck.com is working to have the authority to conduct this search re-instated, Gymnastics BC can no longer accept PRCs provided by a third party provider such as mybackcheck.com.

Gymnastics BC requires that searches for pardoned sexual offences (Vulnerable Sector Searches - VSS) be conducted for all member coaches. Because of the changes to the federal policies, this type of search can now ONLY be done in person at an applicant's local police detachment.
