Strong results for BC athletes at WAG Elite Canada

(12/14/09) Briannah Tsang (Omega) won the bronze medal in the all around of the junior competition at Elite Canada this past weekend in Oakville. She then added 2 gold medals in the event finals on vault and floor as well as silver on bars.

“I’m pretty excited right now, this is the best I’ve ever done,” said Tsang, moments after the concluding medal ceremony. She added that she was more focussed than at other competitions and also a little nervous when she unveiled two new vaults en route to the gold medal.

“The second vault was harder in some ways even though it had less difficulty because it was the first time I used a front handspring on the entry and it was pretty scary,” said Tsang.

Riley Cholod (Oshawa) won the competition followed by Bianca Jordaan (Oakville). BC's Shae Zamardi (Omega) finished fourth in the all around followed closely by Taylor Ricci (Flicka) in fifth. Zamardi and Ricci both also won bronze medals in the event finals on bars and beam respectively. Also representing BC were Tamara Kuno (Flicka, 24th) and Dayna Weststeyn (TAG, 26th).

In the senior competition, Charlotte Mackie (Club Aviva) won the bronze medal in the all around competition while the defending champion Brittany Rogers was 4th. Dominique Pegg (Sarnia) won the Elite Canada title followed by Kristina Vaculik (Oshawa) in her return to competition following a year-long absence due to injury.

(11/06/09) Eight of Canada’s Olympic hopefuls in gymnastics are set to compete at  the 2009 Pan Am junior championships November 6-8 in Aracaju, Brazil. The four-member men’s team consists of Robert Watson (Richmond), Ian Galvan of Calgary, Jaylan Birl and Tariq Dowers, both of Mississauga, Ont. The team’s top medal threats are Birl and Watson, who finished 1-2 in the all around competition at the 2009 Canadian junior championships.

Watson placed fourth all around last month at a tri-nation meet against the U.S. and Germany in Colorado Springs and prevented an American sweep in the apparatus finals by tying for gold on the high bar. Brittany Rogers finishes her first World Championships in 19th in the All Around Final and 7th on vault.

(10/17/09) Competing for the first time as one of the top-24 female gymnasts in the world, Brittany Rogers (Omega) placed 19th in the women's all around event on Friday at the world gymnastics championships.

Americans Bridget Sloan and Rebecca Bross finished 1-2 and Koko Tsurumi of Japan was third, competing in front of over 10,000 spectators at London's O2 Arena.

It was by far the biggest crowd Rogers, 16, has ever experienced as a gymnast, and may have contributed to a miscue in her first event of the night when she fell midway through her beam routine.

"I don't think I was focusing enough at the start," said Rogers. "I was kind of in shock, 'wow the crowd is huge, wow I'm top 24 in the world,' and then when I fell, I was thinking, 'oh, oh, what do I do now."

But Rogers bounced back on her next three events, placing 18th on floor, 14th on vault and 12th on uneven bars to move up to 19th overall. Canada's best-ever finish in the women's all around at a world championship came in 2003 when Calgary's Kylie Stone placed 14th.

Rogers planned to use the experience gained from the all around when she competed again on Saturday in the eight-woman vault final. With two strong vaults, she improved upon her score from the preliminaries with a 2 vault average of 14.200 in her favourite event. Rogers is now a member of a very exclusive club as only four other Canadian female gymnasts have ever reached an event final at a world championship going back to 1956.

Brittany Rogers notches one of Canada's best ever results in women's competition at world championships

(10/15/09) Sixteen-year-old Brittany Rogers (Omega) notched one of Canada's best-ever results in women's competition at the world gymnastics championships on Wednesday, qualifying for the individual event final on vault.

Rogers qualified seventh in the eight-woman vault final with a score of 13.975, joining an exclusive club of just five Canadian women to reach an event final at the world championships.

Toronto's Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs was the last to accomplish the feat at the 2006 worlds in Aarhus, Denmark, where she went on to become the first, and so far only Canadian female gymnast to win a world championship medal -- a bronze on beam.

Rogers, competing at her first world championships, also earned a spot in the women's all around final, placing 18th in a field of 147 competitors. Rebecca Bross of the United States topped the field in the women's qualification with a score of 57.400. Ana Porgras of Romania was second overall and Lauren Mitchell of Australia third.

"This has just topped everything I've ever done," said a clearly elated Rogers. "It's been my ultimate goal to compete at the world championships and even if I didn't make any finals, I competed as best as I could and nailed it."

Rogers was the top Canadian in three of the four events, placing 16th on uneven bars, 34th on beam and 43rd on floor.

Charlotte Mackie (Club Aviva) was 28th all around and top Canadian on beam, placing 21st. Rounding out the three-member Canadian squad, Calgary's Sydney Sawa finished 33rd all around.

Rogers said she fed off the enthusiasm of a large crowd at London's O2 Arena, where the gymnastics events will be staged at the 2012 Summer Games.

"I wasn't nervous at all, in warmup I was thinking 'am I training or competing' and I think that helped me. I love the crowd here. It definitely pumps me up and gets me going, to see people appreciate what we do is just amazing. If they're having fun, I'm having fun."

Rogers competes again Friday in the all around final and on Saturday in the vault final.

Four BC Athletes set to take on the World.

(10/06/09) Brittany Rogers, Charlotte Mackie, Chelsea Nerpio and Luke Friesen will represent BC and Canada this fall at the World Championships. First up are the artistic gymnastics world championships October 13-18 in London followed by the trampoline and tumbling worlds November 7-15 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

This year's world artistic championships features just individual competition, the only time in the four-year Olympic cycle that does not include a team event for participating countries.

In the women's competition, Brittany Rogers and Charlotte Mackie, both of Coquitlam, B.C. are world championship rookies while 2009 Canadian all around champion Sydney Sawa of Calgary competed at the 2007 worlds in Stuttgart, Germany.

Rogers, the 2007 Canadian junior champion and 2008 Elite Canada senior champion, has fought off a series of minor injuries, including a displaced rib which knocked her out of the Canadian championships, and has looked strong at recent training camps.

"All three girls have been doing well in training and they should all have a chance to qualify for the all around final," says women's head coach Vladimir Lashin of Coquitlam, B.C.

Following a training camp with the Russian team near Moscow Rogers and Mackie combined for five medals in early September at the Vitaly Scherbo Cup in Minsk, a good sign that both former junior stars are on the right track heading to worlds.

Qualifying for an event final will be tough says Lashin, but Rogers could have a chance for a top-eight on vault, beam and floor, while Mackie's best bets are beam and vault while Sawa is strongest on beam.

A month after the artistic gymnastics world championships, the Trampoline World Champoinships take place in St. Petersburg with Luke Friesen and Chelsea Nerpio representing Canada on the Double Mini-Trampoline team.

Following the senior world championships, a 38-member Canadian team will compete at age group worlds at the same venue from November 15-22. (more

BC's Charlotte Mackie & Brittany Rogers to represent Canada at Artistic World Championships

(10/02/09) For the first time in 10 years, BC will have 2 representatives on the women's artistic team at the World Championships. Brittany Rogers and Charlotte Mackie, along with Sydney Sawa of Calgary are set to compete at the 2009 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in London, England from October 13-18. The last time that BC had two women's artistic gymnastics athletes at the World Championships was in 1999 when Kate Richardson and Lise Leveille helped Canada qualify a full team for the 2000 Olympics.

Also competing at the Artistic World Championships are Olympic veterans Brandon O'Neill of Edmonton and Nathan Gafuik of Calgary along with Kevin Lytwyn of Burlington, Ont., and Jackson Payne of Edmonton.

This year's worlds features just individual competition, the only time in the four-year Olympic cycle that does not include a team event for participating countries.

It's a chance for many of the medal winners from the Beijing to get back in harness and, at the same time, an opportunity for all competitors to get a feel for the 2012 Olympic venue at London's O2 Arena. At the last individual-only worlds in 2005, O'Neill won the silver medal in the men's floor exercise.

Gafuik and O'Neill both competed at the last two world championships in 2006 and 2007, while Sawa was a member of the Canadian women's team two years ago in Stuttgart, Germany. Lytwyn, Payne, Mackie and Rogers will all be competing at their first world championships.

Head coach of the Canadian men's team is Edouard Iarov of Cantley, Que., and head coach of the women's team is Vladimir Lashin of Coquitlam, B.C.

Other BC members of the Canadian contingent at the world championships:

BC gymnasts Chelsea Nerpio and Luke Friesen help Canada to international DMT medals

(09/14/09) Gillian Bruce of Calgary helped Canada to gold in the team event and added an individual bronze in double mini trampoline on Saturday at the Loule Cup trampoline competition while the Canadian men took team silver.

Canada won gold in the women's double mini trampoline team competition with 100.8 points. Joining Bruce on the squad were Chelsea Nerpio  (Shasta), Corissa Boychuk of Airdrie, Alta., and Julie Warnock of Calgary.  England was second at 97.4 and a second English squad was third at 93.5.

In the men's double mini trampoline team event, Portugal won the gold medal with 108.1 points, the Canadians took the silver at 104.1 and England was third at 103.3. The Canadians were at a disadvantage with a three-member team while the other countries had four. The three best scores counted towards the final results.

Luke Friesen (Okanagan), Scott Young and Colton Kent, both of Calgary all hit their passes.

"We definitely felt more pressure," said Friesen. "We saw one of the guys on the English team mess up and we knew we didn't have that margin for error. We had to make all our points count and it went really well. It was also nice to come back today and win a medal after not making the individual finals yesterday (Friday)."

In the women's double mini trampoline individual final, Ana Simoes of Portugal won the gold medal with Robyn Osborne of England, who grew up in Nova Scotia, second and Bruce third. Nerpio was fourth, Boychuk sixth, Kim Evans of Edmonton was seventh and Warnock eighth.

BC gymnasts Brittany Rogers and Charlotte Mackie combine for five medals at Vitaly Scherbo Cup

(09/14/09) BC gymnasts Brittany Rogers, in her first competition since February, and Charlotte Mackie won gold and silver respectively in the vault final on Friday at the 12-country Vitaly Scherbo Cup gymnastics competition.

Rogers and Mackie, both from Coquitlam, B.C., combined forces for five medals.  Mackie added a bronze on beam and Rogers was also third on floor.  In the all around event, Rogers was third and Mackie fourth.

Canada's women's high performance national coach Vladimir Lashin said the BC gymnasts reached their goals at the event.

"This was a big test for Brittany as she had a very long recovery period from a back injury," said Lashin.  "And for Charlotte she wanted to put in a solid all around event prior to the world championships (next month in London).  The girls are getting stronger and are ready to face the strongest gymnasts in the world."

"We also wanted to get their names out there with the international judges one more time with strong performances and we achieved that."

Mackie and Rogers have been training at the Russian national gymnastics training centre near Moscow since the end of August.

Gymnastics BC Life Member Gladys Hartley Passed Away

(08/05/09) It is with great sadness that we have learned that Gladys Hartley, Life Member of Gymnastics BC, passed away July 27, 2009 at the age of 88. The BC gymnastics community has lost a great builder and supporter.

Upon arriving in BC in 1952 from Fort William, ON, Gladys made a significant impact upon the lives of thousands of young people through her involvement with gymnastics, dance and figure skating. Gladys
was a pioneer builder of the Flicka Gymnastics Club in North Vancouver. From 1963 into the 1980's, Gladys coached many Olympians and international gymnasts, including Sandra Hartley, Leslie Bird, Janet Terry, Tami Martin, Karen Kelsall, Lisa Broderick, Tami Knight, Maureen Chow and Anita and Sandra Botnen.

Known as "Mrs. Flicka" for her thousands of volunteer hours, Gladys generously shared all she knew with other coaches, helping put BC on the International gymnastics map. At the time there was no head office for the BC Gymnastics Association (Gymnastics BC) which was run 100% by volunteers. The regular visits by international teams as well as clinics and meets all over the province were largely dependent on the organization and planning of Gladys.

Gladys was highly respected for her fair treatment of all athletes. Athletes felt it was a great honour to work with her because her artistic ideas would always bring a special flair (and higher scores) to their routines. Her attention to helping all gymnasts made Gladys first choice as Provincial Coach over many years, and it was a role the Canadian Gymnastics Federation noticed. Gladys was invited to travel with the national team to England, Cuba, Israel, and Scandinavia throughout the early 1970%u2019s.

In recognition of her enormous impact upon gymnastics Gladys was was named as a Lifetime member of the Canadian Gymnastics Federation in 1975, a Gymnastics BC Life Member in 2000 and inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

A private graveside service was held on Friday, July 31 with Gladys wearing her Gymnastics Canada Life Member pin. A Celebration of Gladys' life will take place on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at her home in North Vancouver at 2:00 p.m. To register, please email gladyshartleymemorial@shaw.ca.  (more)

Charlotte Mackie wins 3 medals at Gymnix World Cup | Nathan Gafuik and Sydney Sawa take 2

(09/03/09) Calgary's Nathan Gafuik rose to the occasion, winning a silver medal in the men's floor exercise and a bronze on vault at the first World Cup gymnastics meet held in Canada since 1996.

On floor, Gafuik earned the second World Cup medal of his career with a routine he scaled down slightly since the Elite Canada meet two weeks ago in Surrey, B.C.

-It's early in the season and my routines really aren't where I want them to be yet but floor tonight was pretty solid and I did as well as could have been expected."

A total of 39 men from 12 countries began the competition on Friday with the top eight in each of six events advancing to finals over two days.

In the women's competition, Charlotte Mackie (Surrey) placed first on vault, second on floor and third on beam while Sydney Sawa of Calgary, a last-minute replacement for injured Britanny Rogers (Omega), finished third on uneven bars and floor exercise.

Despite the small size of the women's field -- just four countries participated -- Mackie and Sawa said they were thrilled to win medals at their first World Cup competition.

-I just tried to make my vault the best I could do, and that's what I did," said Mackie. -It was really exciting to be competing in Canada. I loved it."
