Overview of Gymnastics BC Coaching Policies

Important:

WAG & MAG NCCP Certification Requirements as of January 1, 2010

As of January 2010, a NCCP Level 3 certification (including theory, technical and practical) is required to coach National level WAG and MAG athletes during training and at all BC events and Canadian Championships. This was announced last season and was implemented to harmonize our requirements with Gymnastics Canada requirements.

After January 2010, coaches will need to request an exemption if they are not Level 3 Certified and are coaching national stream athletes. Exemptions will be granted once and will be valid until the next Level 3 Technical course is offered. The coaches will have 1 year  following the course to complete the Practical component and will need to complete their Level 3 at the next Fall Congress. Exemptions for Competition Development (formerly Theory Level 3) will be granted for a maximum of 1 year. All Exemption Requests must be submitted online.

GBC Screening Policy

All coaches (18 years or older) who wish to be members of GBC must complete and file a Police Record Check (PRC) with Gymnastics BC.  Gymnastics BC is responsible, at law, to do everything reasonable to provide a safe and secure environment for participants in it’s programs. GBC takes this very seriously, and is committed to, fulfilling the duty of care it owes to its members.

PRCs are valid for a period of three years (new as of September 2010). Notwithstanding this, Gymnastics BC may at any time request that an individual in a designated category provide a PRC if GBC has grounds to believe that the results of the PRC obtained previously are no longer accurate.

To see the complete Screening Policy, please see 1.6 of Section 1B: Ethics of the Gymnastics BC Policy and Procedures manual.

Requirements for Coaching Staff

For ALL gymnastics related activities, there must be present at ALL times in the gym:

  1. A coach that is at least Gymnastics Foundations Certified
  2. All coaches 15 years and older must have completed the Respect in Sport program, regardless of the program they coach (recreational or competitive), their NCCP Certification level or the level or age of the participants

  3. One adult 19 years and older (as per provincial law)

  4. One person that holds a valid certification in first aid from one of the following courses: Red Cross Standard First Aid, WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level 1 or St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid. Any other certifications must be approved by the GBC Technical Director.

These responsibilities may be held by one person or a combination of persons.

Use of Trampoline in Artistic Program (Coach's Certification)

For all programs using trampoline, one coach with the appropriate certification must directly supervise the trampoline when in use. Direct supervision means: at or in the trampoline area and focused only on trampoline supervision.

Coaches who have NCCP Level 2 Technical in Artistic Gymnastics can use the trampoline as a teaching tool (for saltos and aerials skills and to supervise a group doing non-inverted skills) as long as the coach has taken the Gymnastics Foundations Trampoline course (or the Technical Level 1 Trampoline course under the old NCCP).

It is recommended that coaches using the trampoline in their programs complete the appropriate NCCP Gymnastics Foundations Trampoline certification.

Coaches who are trained Gymnastics Foundations Artistic coaches are not certified to teach any skills on the trampoline, including non inverted skills.

School Programs

Coaches that are going into a school to do an in-service with the students or teachers must be affiliated with a GBC member club and be registered with GBC. The coach must be at least Gymnastics Foundations certified.  The coach will be covered for accident and liability insurance, as long as GBC has been notified prior to the in-service date.

Schools are required to register as Associate Members of GBC and meet the associate membership conditions.  The conditions and associate member benefits can be found in the Membership Services section of this Policy and Procedures Manual.

Equivalency for Coaches

Coaches who are recent (within the previous 12 months) arrivals to Canada may apply for NCCP equivalency.  The applicant must be a full time resident of Canada and must be working in Canada.  Applications will be reviewed by the EP Director and experts identified by the Program Committee of the concerned gymnastics sport, who will determine an appropriate level of equivalency on a case by case basis.  Some considerations may be given to special cases.

To be granted equivalency, the coach will also be required to pass an 'assessment' interview with an identified Master or Mentor LF.  The club or coach requesting the equivalency will be required to pay the expenses of the individual conducting the interview.

Full details on the procedure for requesting equivalency can be downloaded from the Gymnastics Canada website.

Applying for Exemption of Coaching Certification for Competitions

If a coach wishes to apply for an exemption from the NCCP minimum standards, they must provide a written request to GBC at least 4 weeks prior to a provincial level competition.  This must be done using the online form.

For national level competitions, all inquiries must be made to GCG and refer to GCG NCCP regulations. Requests that are received less than 4 weeks in advance are subject to a $30 application fee. Late applications may be turned down if there is not adequate time to investigate the request.

Applications are most likely to be considered if:

  1. The applicant has demonstrated a genuine effort to obtain certification (i.e. proof of a course that they registered for that had been cancelled or a record of recent professional development activities - Introduction to Competition Part "B" Theory)

  2. The applicant lives in an area where course have not been available

  3. The applicant is a new resident of Canada who has proof of coaching certification from another country(ies)
