Requirements and Coaching Responsibilities

(as per Gymnastics BC Policy)

Pre-Coach in Training (Pre-CIT)

The GCG Pre-Coach in Training Program is a two-year program for 13-15 year olds.  It can be completed in one year if a coach enters the program at age 14 (they would complete the two years in one).

A candidate for this program is someone who wants to coach and is at least 13 years old but less than 16 years old.

This person can act as an assistant coach to a certified coach, but cannot have sole responsibility of a group.  A Pre-CIT must always be under the direct supervision of a certified coach.  Direct supervision is defined as one certified coach supervising one Pre-CIT at one time.

As per the Coaching Association of Canada policies, a person must be at least 16 years old at the time of taking a course to be granted credit for the course.  Assistant coaches who have completed the two-year Pre-CIT program are allowed to begin their Gymnastics Foundations training at age 15 instead of age 16.  However, a coach cannot complete the Gymnastics Foundations evaluation to become certified until they reach the age of 16.

Coach Certification for Use of Trampoline in Artistic Program

For all programs using trampoline, one coach with the appropriate certification must directly supervise the trampoline when in use. Direct supervision means: at or in the trampoline area and focused only on trampoline supervision.

Coaches who have NCCP Level 2 Technical in Artistic Gymnastics can use the trampoline as a teaching tool (for saltos and aerials skills and to supervise a group doing non-inverted skills) as long as the coach has taken the Gymnastics Foundations Part 3 Trampoline course (or the Technical Level 1 Trampoline course under the old NCCP).

It is recommended that coaches using the trampoline in their programs complete the appropriate NCCP Gymnastics Foundations Trampoline certification.

Coaches who are trained Gymnastics Foundations Artistic coaches are not certified to teach any skills on the trampoline, including non inverted skills.

Coach Certification and School Programs

Coaches that are going into a school to do an in-service with the students or teachers must be affiliated with a GBC member club and be registered with GBC. The coach must be at least Gymnastics Foundations certified.  The coach will be covered for accident and liability insurance, as long as GBC has been notified prior to the in-service date.

Schools are required to register as Associate Members of GBC and meet the associate membership conditions.  The conditions and associate member benefits can be found in the Membership Services section of this Policy and Procedures Manual.
